Aids Organizations: The ONE Campaign, Raise Awareness And Make Donations
By:
Published: August 2, 2007
There are many different groups in the world fighting injustice, poverty, hate, and disease on the planet. One of the biggest pandemics affecting civilization right now is the spread of AIDS in Africa. There are many dozens of AIDS organizations trying to fight this epidemic in some of the world's poorest areas.
As with most world issues, celebrities have taken to this cause. One of the top celebrity AIDS groups is the ONE Campaign. The ONE Campaign is spreading quickly and uniting many different people and groups to help in this serious fight.
The ONE Campaign is founded on a few different principals. The first and most important ideal is securing monies equal to one percent of the total spending budget of the United States. Organizers hope to achieve this by developing a grassroots public movement spearheaded by celebrities and business leaders which will ultimately force Congress to push though legislation to get that money. The ideal for the ONE Campaign is that this money would significantly reduce world hunger, child education, provide sanitation to some of the world's poorest areas, and prevent serious disease outbreaks, specifically HIV and AIDS.
To this end, many celebrities and politicians have taken to the ONE Campaign, more than any other AIDS organizations. Dave Matthews, Bill Gates, Tom Brady, and Bono are among the celebrities that have lent their name and face to ONE. Of course, the campaign itself has been publicly spearheaded by Bono, the lead singer of U2 and a noted political activist. Bono has long been a prominent participant in AIDS and poverty relief charities around the world, but he has thrown his full support of late behind the ONE Campaign.
The ONE Campaign is already starting to see results. Donations have poured in from around the world to help supply the ONE Campaign with funding. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, for example, has already given donations exceeding $3 million to help ONE fight poverty and AIDS in Africa. The ONE Campaign also has launched a successful marketing campaign, using television ads, clothing, and products with the ONE logo to raise awareness of the group's goals.
The ONE Campaign has come under some fire for commercializing their awareness campaign. Because of the products, advocacy videos, and political activism, some advocacy groups have questioned whether or not ONE is over celebritized and commercialized. There is no doubt, however, that ONE has certainly mobilized the population with its marketing strategy, with several million declared members and several bills passed by or introduced in Congress to support the ONE Campaign's effort.
There is no doubt that AIDS and poverty, not just in Africa but around the world, is reaching pandemic proportions, and many agree that it is the duty of the richest nations of the world to help control these issues. The ONE Campaign has made a serious effort to popularize the issues with flashy marketing and celebrity involvement, yet has already made great steps to improve the world. With so much of the planet in turmoil, every effort helps.
