AIDS Physicians: HIV Research Labs And AIDS Treatments

By:

Published: August 6, 2007

In the 2000 book "AIDS Doctors: Voices from the Epidemic" one of the AIDS Physicians interviewed describes her job as "a travel agent for death in which she . . . was to make the process as drawn out, as comfortable and as full of interesting things as it was possible to do." For the 26 year-old epidemic, perhaps this is as much as AIDS Physicians can do: become medical guides for the inevitable outcome of a patient's death. Though HIV research has yielded treatments that decrease the escalation of the virus, an AIDS Physician has a limited arsenal in their bag of medical tricks to actually provide treatments that result in a cure.

Globally, HIV labs (both governmental and private) are searching for treatments that may be a magic bullet for this mutating virus. AIDS Physicians rely on HIV research technicians to create new treatments for each incarnation of the mutating virus, but often times it is merely a game of medical chess, wherein the AIDS patient doctor knows the patient was instantaneously in checkmate as soon as they contracted the virus. This knowledge does not pillage the hope of AIDS Physicians, but rather increases the hope that HIV research will ultimately produce cure-all treatments.

As HIV research continues and AIDS Physicians keep their fingers crossed, over 4,000 people die each day in Africa. Any AIDS patient doctor knows that treatments are extremely costly, and because of this, HIV research has embarked on a prevention and treatments course for those who have yet to contract the disease. One such method, addressed by Professor Robert Bailey at the 4th IAS conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatments and Prevention in Sydney, Australia, was the advocacy of male circumcision in sub-Sahara Africa. AIDS Physician, Dr. Bailey, estimates that in over ten years, 2 million HIV cases could be prevented by encouraging the practice.

The studies were conducted in Uganda, Kenya, Zambia, and Malawai by AIDS Physicians, and suggested that male circumcision reduces male to female contraction by 60%. This HIV research has been a breakthrough for AIDS Physicians in the region, but most studies show that besides not engaging in sexual activity, the only prevention with a higher success rate is the use of condoms, which yield an estimated 80% rate of prevention. AIDS Physicians stress the use of protection more than any other method, because once the disease is contract, there really is no turning back.

As AIDS Physicians continue to reduce the amount of pain and suffering for their inflicted patients, many are not holding their breath. AIDS Physicians are not with out controversial compassion, as can be seen in the 1997 case of Dr. Maurice Genereux who plead guilty to assisting two patients in suicide. The Darth Vader of Doctors stood trial for administering lethal doses of medicine to people who were argued to be not in their complete mental facility. He received two years prison and three years probation for his actions, and though his actions were not ethically sound in the medical field, some AIDS Physicians sympathize with him.

The AIDS epidemic continues to ravage the world and 25 million have died thus far, while HIV labs continue to search for treatments. AIDS Physicians continue to tend to their patients, waiting for news of a cure, and AIDS patients realize their time is slowly running out. AIDS Physicians agree that the best prevention of the disease for sexually active people is to use protection when engaging in intercourse, practice discretion in sexual partners, and to be tested often when changing partners.
